Breathe With Ease

Web site can help you control your asthma.

By Shelly Dobransky-Nishida

More than 106,000 Hawaii residents suffer from asthma, and the number of asthma patients nationally has increased by more than 60 percent since the early 1980s.

If you are one of the estimated 500,000 Americans suffering from asthma, visit the American Lung Association's (ALA) site, which offers comprehensive information and helpful guidelines.

The "Asthma Management" section includes tips and ideas to improve your condition, including learning how to work with your doctor.

It's also important to avoid exposure to triggers, such as smoke, dust or mold. To help control pollen exposure, use a dryer to prevent pollen from collecting on your laundry, and use an air conditioner instead of keeping your windows open. Access the "Home Control of Asthma and Allergies" link for more helpful suggestions.

Visit the AHA site to learn how to breathe with greater ease and enjoy better health.
